Venezuela is a country on the northern coast of South America that extends across 916.445 km². It possesses borders with the Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean and Guyana to the north and east and with Brazil and Colombia to the south and east. The country can be divided into three geographical areas: the extreme northeastern extensions of the Andes reach into Venezuela’s northwest and continue along the Caribbean coast up to Colombia; the nation’s highest point at 5000 metres lies in this region and so does Lake Maracaibo. The country’s centre is mostly characterized by extensive plains. To the south are numerous highlands; the largest one, Great Savannah, hosts the Canaima National Park, which has recently been appointed UNESCO world heritage. The insular region includes all of Venezuela’s island possessions, such as Margarita island.

Venezuela is a Federal Republic. It has a population of nearly 25.730.000 inhabitants. The national and official language is Spanish. The country has a tropical climate which features a rainy season (November – April) and a dry season (May – October), although it varies substantially according to the different areas: mountains are often snow-capped, while coastal resorts, such as Maracaibo, enjoy yearly average temperatures of about 30°C.
