Twice the size of Italy (more than 780.000 square kilometres), Turkey is an Eurasian country that stretches across the Anatolian peninsula in western Asia. It borders Greece and Bulgaria to the south-west, Georgia and Armenia to the east and Iran, Iraq and Syria to the south.
The Mediterranean Sea is to the south; the Aegean Sea to the west and the Black Sea to the north.
With the exception of the coastline overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, Turkey has a mountainous landscape, (the highest point being Mount Ararat) and hosts the Pontic mountains to the north and the Taurus chain to the south, home to the sources of rivers such as the Tigris and the Euphrates and to the two main lowlands, Adana and Antalya.
Turkey is a constitutional republic with over 68 million inhabitants. The territory is subdivided into 81 provinces for administrative purposes. The capital city is Ankara but the most important business city is Istanbul. The local currency is the Turkish Lira.
The coastal areas of Turkey bordering the Mediterranean Sea have a temperate Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and wet winters and average temperatures ranging from 30 to 35°C during summer; the central Anatolian plateau of the interior of Turkey has a continental climate with sharply contrasting seasons; the coastline of the Black Sea is the mildest region, featuring humid summers and dry winters and an average temperature of 10°C in winter and 27°C in summer.
