The third largest country by population (over 300 millions inhabitants), the USA are situated mostly in central North-America, between the Pacific (to the west) and the Atlantic Ocean (to the east), bordered by Canada to the north and Mexico to the south.

The territory is extremely varied because of the United States’ large size (about 32 times larger than the Italian one) and comprises other possessions such as Alaska, the Hawaii islands and some islands in the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea (Porto Rico); it is made up of the coastal plain of the Atlantic seaboard to the east, which stretches south up to the Mexican Gulf; the Great Plains surrounded by the Appalachian Mountains and the Rocky Mountains, which are in turn subdivided into: the Great Lakes west of the Appalachian Mountains, the Missouri Valley to the west and the Mississippi plain up to the coasts of the Mexican Gulf; the mountain ranges of New England to the north, the Allegheny massif to the south and the western Alaska mountains which lead to California and the Death Valley.
Beyond the numerous mountain ranges, such as the volcanic Rocky Mountains, the United States boast other interesting environmental attractions such as the Yellowstone National Park, rich in impressive geysers.
The main rivers are Mississippi, Missouri and all their tributaries which flow in central America; the major lakes are Michigan, Ontario and Lake Superior.
