Spain is a country located in south-western Europe and covers the most of the Iberian Peninsula (the remaining part being covered by Portugal). The Spanish mainland is bordered to the south and east most entirely by the Mediterranean Sea; to the north by France; and to the west by the Atlantic Ocean.
Spanish territory also includes the Balearic islands (in the Mediterranean) and the Canary Islands (in the Atlantic Ocean off the African Coast); mainland Spain is dominated by mountain ranges which make it the second highest country in Europe behind Switzerland. The main chains are: the Iberian Massif (to the east), the Meseta Central, the Cantabrian Mountains to the north, the Betic mountains, the southern Sierra Morena, the Galicia to the west and the Pyrenees which divide Spain from France.
Running from these heights are several major rivers such as the Duero, the Tagus, the Guadiana, the Guadalquivir and the Ebro. Alluvial plains are found along the coast, the largest of which is that of the Guadalquivir.
Spain is a constitutional monarchy with capital city Madrid. It officially reached over 45 millions inhabitants which are distributed along the most populated areas (77% of the population). It is politically organized into 17 Autonomous Communities; a member of the UME (European Monetary Union), its local currency is the Euro.
Due to Spain’s geographical situation, the climate is extremely diverse. An oceanic climate takes place in the north-western coastal strip, with cool winters and mild summers; the moderate continental climate takes place in the inland areas of the Peninsula, featuring cold winters and hot and dry summers; the Mediterranean climate region has temperate winters and warm springs and summers. The Canary Islands boast a sub-tropical climate, with cool and rainy winters and hot summers (average temperatures from 24 to 29°C).
