Germany is bordered to the north by the North Sea, Denmark and the Baltic Sea, to the east by Poland and the Czech Republic, to the south by Austria and Switzerland and to the west by France, Luxemburg, Belgium and Holland.
Elevation ranges from the Swabian-Bavarian Alpine foothills in the south, situated just in the heart of the Danube valley, to the Deutsches Mittelgebirge, the sweet cultivated hills situated in central Germany, to the low-lying lands of northern Germany and the sandy coastline.
Germany is traversed by some of Europe’s major rivers such as Danube, Rhine, Elbe, Oder, Mosel and Main. The largest lake is Lake Constance, which defines the borders with Switzerland and Austria.
Most of Germany has a temperate climate featuring relatively warm summers (15°-30° C) and mild winters to the west and cold winters to the east. Weather is changeable, featuring high levels of rainfall especially in the west. Springs and summers are characterized by the highest level of rainfall, featuring strong afternoon storms.
The coastline of the Black Sea enjoy a relatively mild and humid climate, while the coasts of the Baltic sea are colder and the sea is frozen almost all the year round.
