France is a country whose metropolitan territory is located in Western Europe. It is bordered by Belgium and Luxemburg in the Northeast, Germany and Switzerland in the East, Italy, Monaco and Andorra in the Southeast and Spain in the Southwest. Its coastline is very long (3400 kilometres), cause France is bordered by the Channel Tunnel in the North, the Mediterranean Sea in the South and the Atlantic Ocean in the West.
France possesses a wide variety of mountain ranges, such as the Armorican Massif in the northwest, the Central massif in the centre-south, the Alps in the southeast, the Pyrenees, the Jura and the Ardennes; instead, the country is poor in plains and lowlands. France also has extensive river systems such as the Rhine, the Seine, the Marne, the Meuse, the Loire (the longest river which originates from the Central Massif), the Rhône with its tributary Saône, the alpine rivers Iserè and Durance. Among the most important lakes is the Lake Lemano which France shares with Switzerland, as well as other mountain lakes.
The French Republic is the third largest European country, it has about 65 millions inhabitants and its local currency is the Euro since it joined the Economic Monetary Union in 2002.
France is characterized by different climate zones: northern France, which overlooks the Channel Tunnel, has temperate winters, cool summers and an high level of rainfall; around the capital city rainfall is lighter, winters are colder and summers are cooler; inland the climate becomes more continental with cold winters and hot summers; in the southern France (Côte d’Azur) winters are milder, autumns and springs are characterized by an high level of rainfall and summers are hotter; in Corsica a mild climate prevails all the year round.
