Egypt is a country in north-east Africa (942.247 km2) that includes the Sinai peninsula (59.202 km2), a land bridge to Asia. The Arab Republic of Egypt borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Israel and the Red Sea to the East, Sudan to the south (1100 km) and Libya to the west (1160 km).
Egypt can be divided into different geographical regions: the Nile Valley from Sudan to Cairo extends for 1200 km and its width ranges from 10 to 15 kilometres; the Nile Delta, the ancient Lower Egypt, rich in lagoons; the mountainous and dry Sinai peninsula, separated from the remaining part of Egypt by the Suez Gulf and Canal; the Eastern Desert, a mountainous and dry territory between the Nile and the Red Sea which culminates in a low and sandy coast dominated by the promontories Ras Zeit and Ras Banas; the Western Desert which covers the area west from the Nile, a dry and sandy desert which overlooks the sea and features a low and sandy coast.
The climate is affected by the presence of the desert, featuring little or no rainfall, high temperatures all the year round and a wide temperature range; a steady wind from the northwest helps hold down the temperatures near the Mediterranean Coast. The khamsin is a wind that blows from the south in Egypt for 50 days after the vernal equinox, bringing sand and dust, and sometimes raises the temperature in the desert. The Red Sea Coast features an arid climate, with little rainfall, strong winds and wide temperature ranges.
